Wave hello to three new Samsung Bada 2.0 phones

30 August 2011 9:36 GMT / By Paul Lamkin

When Samsung officially announced Bada 2.0 last week, it promised that three new Wave handsets would follow later this year.

Well, their time frame may have been a tad conservative as the Samsung Wave 3, Samsung Wave M and Samsung Wave Y have all now hit officialdom.

Starting with the Wave 3, because it's the daddy of the bunch, and we're looking at a Bada handset, but with Android-like specs; it seems that Bada is ready to come out of the corner.

It packs a 1.4GHz processor, HSDPA 14.4 connectivity, a 4-inch WVGA Super AMOLED display, 3GB of onboard storage (expandable with microSD), Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, an accelerometer, a digital compass, a proximity sensor and a 5-megapixel camera with AF and an LED flash. There's also a VGA camera for video calling.

iTunes Match streams in for iOS 5

30 August 2011 10:13 GMT / By Paul Lamkin

Remember all the criticism of Apple when iCloud was officially announced at WWDC back in June, about how the iTunes Match service could only download your tunes, rather than stream them?

Well, all that hot-air looks like being a big waste of time as the latest iTunes beta (10.5 beta 6.1) has launched and, combined with the latest iOS 5 beta, provides an all singing, all dancing and, most importantly, all streaming service.

Insanely Great Mac has posted a video tutorial showing that the service provides not only the ability to remotely download tracks at 256kbps that are matched to your library, but to instantly stream them too.

Mac Rumours has confirmed that the streaming option works the same way on all iOS devices, meaning instant access to your entire music library from all of your iThings, whenever you've got a network connection. Nice.

Remember iTunes Match is a US only service at the moment though - copyright issues are preventing the service from landing in the UK for now. But, if you do live Stateside, or know a work-around, then Apple will throw in an extra 3 months subscription for free (with your $24.99) to cover the beta period.

iTunes 10.5 beta 6.1 is available now.

IFA 2011 - the gadgets we're expecting to see

30 August 2011 10:43 GMT / By Dan Sung

The IFA 2011 consumer electronics show powers up in Berlin in a matter of days and with it one of the most important dates in the gadgets and technology calendar. If you don’t know what IFA is all about then by all means do yourself some learning but, for the potted version, it’s when the big manufacturers get together in a particularly large and unwieldy exhibition centre to tell the kit-lovers of Europe just what we’ll be finding on the shelves of our favourite outlets come Christmas. It's an EU tech-fest.

While the AV world normally dominates the proceedings, there's a suspicion that this year's event will see more of a maturing of the newer TV technologies - 3D, smart TV - rather than anything wildly groundbreaking. So perhaps time for other categories to take centre stage. Here's the list of what we're expecting to be announced and what we're sure to be grabbing hands-on pictures of for the very first time.

Mobile Phones

With a whole 6 months plus to wait until the actual annual mobile phone trade show, that is Mobile World Congress, there's simply too vast a handset turnover in this day and age for some manufactures to wait that long. The upshot is that IFA can often be the time that some phones make their debut.

Samsung Galaxy Q

The biggest rumour, practically nailed on with the official teaser trailer, is surrounding Samsung's supposed super-sized smartphone known simply as the Galaxy Q. It’s a 5.3-inch device with a Super AMOLED display and connectivity via 3G WCDMA as well as 4G LTE - just in case a suitable high speed network infrastructure turns up any time soon.

TomTom appy to be social for new travel features

30 August 2011 10:51 GMT / By Paul Lamkin

TomTom has seemingly forgotten that most people now carry smartphones, and has announced that it will be introducing apps for its satnavs.

TomTom Live satnavs will give users access to Twitter, TripAdvisor, Expedia and Yelp - providing a similar set of options that you'd get through Google Local on your satnav, only more specific.

For example, if you're stuck in a strange town, you could look up hotels - complete with prices, reviews and the distance you are from it with the Expedia app, or check out restaurant reviews for nearby eateries using TripAdvisor or Yelp.

All stuff you could do with your smartphone, we know - but at least the TomTom apps will give you accurate driving directions too... as could your smartphone. Ho-hum.

The Twitter function is pretty neat though. As well as tweeting your location (as per your...you get our point), it can also be set to auto-tweet your arrival time if you're running late. Now this is a handy function, as tweeting and driving is not cool kids, nor is undeclared tardiness.

TomTom Live devices will all tap into the Search & Go Live services from October 2011. The first device to come boxed with

Transfer swoop as Everton sign Best Buy

30 August 2011 11:25 GMT / By Paul Lamkin

It's hardly up there with Manchester City snapping up Samir Nasri or West Ham buying the brilliantly named Brian Montenegro, but Everton have pulled off a transfer deadline coup by making Best Buy its official technology partner.

The deal means that Everton fans will have ample opportunity on match days to win vouchers to the tech superstore. Best Buy has similar deals in the States with US sports teams (or should that be franchises?)

Ian Boyton, sponsorship and events manager at Best Buy UK, said: “We are very proud to be supporting Everton Football Club. Everton fans are up there as some of the most passionate and connected supporters in the country and we’re thrilled to be joining them at the start of this exciting new season in the Barclays Premier League.

"We know how important the club is to the supporters and we hope we can use our partnership to create an amazing match day experience for fans both in the ground and in their living rooms."

Does this mean an end to Liverpool fans shopping in Best Buy, in protest at their rival's deal. Chelsea wear the Samsung moniker on their shirts and there have been suggestions that fans of other London clubs have boycotted Sammy as a result.

We shall see...

Nikon Coolpix S100 hands-on

30 August 2011 11:34 GMT / By Chris Hall

If you’re looking for slim and sophisticated then the Coolpix S100 is the most compact camera from Nikon's new line-up. Coming with a couple of eye-catching features in 3D and touchscreen control, it is destined for the pockets of party people.

Measuring a svelte 99 x 65.2 x 18.1mm, it is almost entirely free from physical controls, it’s just a solid-feeling slice of camera.

It's a design move we’ve seen from the likes of the Sony TX55, with a similar looking feature set on offer here too. Sliding the cover to one side powers the camera up, ready to start shooting.

Of course, as there are no buttons for the controls, you have to change the settings using the touchscreen. We didn’t have long to explore the interface or a chance to see how it performs under a true Pocket-lint bashing, but it seemed responsive enough to our exploratory pokes.

iPhone not Stephen Fry's greatest gadget

30 August 2011 11:35 GMT / By Rik Henderson

The iPhone, and smartphones generally, only came a paltry 13th in Stephen Fry's 100 Greatest Gadgets - a TV show aired by Channel 4 in the UK yesterday. And the self-confessed Apple fanboy revealed that the iPad (10th) and iPod (3rd) were also beaten by... A lighter. A normal, basic, cheap lighter.

Usually, Channel 4's 100 polls are open to a public vote beforehand, giving UK citizens the chance to see their favourites top the list, however, this time, the choices were up to celebrity gadgeteer Fry himself. As the dedicated web page puts it, the show was entirely, "Stephen Fry choosing and presenting his all-time favourite gadgets."

Fry explained that he chose the lighter as his all-time greatest gadget for its historical importance: "It's not the order in which things are invented that makes them the most impressive, it's the importance they have to humanity. So my number one is this: fire with a flick of the fingers."

And while he may have a point, it's his definition of "gadget" that seems to have confused many who watched the programme. Among his list he also includes the pen, an apple peeler (ooo, he's such an Apple fanboy), a corkscrew and a whistle... No, really.

Of the other devices we cover on Pocket-lint, the eReader (such as the Amazon Kindle) did the worst. It came a mere 99th, three places below a garlic press.

We kid you not.

What do you think? Do you think that the lighter deserves a place in the all time top 100 gadgets? Or do you think that the Apple-loving Fry is off his trolley? Let us know in the comments below...

Wacom, specialist in all things digital-pen related, has announced its latest teched-up scribe - the Wacom Inkling.

Designed with arty types in mind, the digital pen combines with a receiver that clips onto any type of pad meaning you can use normal paper for your digital sketches.

The pen measures pressure (it has 1,024 levels of sensitivity), and then sends details of all the lines it draws to the wireless receiver. The receiver plugs into your PC or Mac and the digital sketches can be viewed or further worked on using a number of programs, including the supplied Inkling Sketch Manager, as well as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Autodesk Sketchbook Pro.

The Inkling can also be teamed up with existing Wacom and Cintiq digital pen tablets and displays too. "For those working with our professional products, the pen is already their input tool of choice," said Guido M

Tech deal: Tetris now free to download from Android Market

30 August 2011 14:44 GMT / By Ben Crompton

EA Mobile has teamed up with Blue Planet Software, the company that manages the exclusive licensing rights to the Tetris brand, to bring Tetris to your Android mobile phone. Not only that, but it'll be free too.

Clearly Tetris needs no introduction; the very fact it stands as one of the most-played video games in the world and is available across 50 platforms in over 185 countries means that the free version will be a welcome addition to the Android platform.

"Tetris is one of the most distinctive, well-known and popular video game franchises in the world and it gives EA the opportunity to grow its already-expanding customer base on the Android platform," said Bernard Kim, vice president of Sales and Marketing for EA Interactive. "Tetris has a strong legacy in the mobile gaming world and we’re excited to bring a free version of Tetris to yet another great platform."

The new free version of the classic game will bring improved visuals, along with marathon mode - which should all come together nicely with its touchscreen controls and allow players to slide, rotate and drop blocks into, hopefully, the right position. All this, and you'll be able to track stats and high scores as well.

APP OF THE DAY - Bouncy Mouse (Android)

30 August 2011 18:00 GMT / By Chris Hall

Ask someone about mobile gaming these days and you’ll be surprised if they don’t say Angry Birds. Although we’ve probably all pretty much moved on from Rovio’s creation, it had a huge impact across all platforms - something that's really left a mark.

The message is clear though. Games that ape console controls don’t hit the mainstream in the same way that the platform-style games can: fiddling with on-screen buttons and joysticks, isn’t as natural as using the simple application of physics. As far as we’re concerned, the less you have to do to control a game, the better it’s going to be.

Following the likes of Angry Birds, Tiny Wings and Cut the Rope, comes today’s App Of The Day which is simple enough, but not always easy.

Bouncy MouseFormat Android
Price Free or 99p to go ad free
Where Android Market

With a name like Bouncy Mouse, you can pretty much imagine what the game is about, or at least who the protagonist is. Yes, you play a mouse that bounces.

Said mouse doesn’t only bounce - he also has an elastic tail, allowing him to be catapulted through the level, attaching to magic pegs (green dots) as he goes. Essentially, catapulting is the primary method of movement in the game.

So to start off, you pull the mouse back and let him fly. When he passes a magic peg his tail will attach to it. Using this method you can move through the platform-style game world, flying from peg to peg.

The aim is to get to the end of the level where you can hit the cat guarding the cheese. It then releases the cheese and you complete that level. En route there are cheeses that you can collect, Mario style, and your choice of route will determine how many you can collect. This is reflected in your score at the end.

Of course this is a game about a bouncy mouse and it becomes immediately obvious that you can’t just fire from one point to the next - you’ll have to bounce off walls and work logically around the place to get all those cheeses.

Samsung Galaxy S Plus

review Last year's phone, this year's performance 30 August 2011 20:32 GMT / By Ian Morris

The first Samsung Galaxy S handset caused quite a fuss for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was a remarkable device and one that people genuinely wanted to own. Secondly, though, was how much it looked like an iPhone, down to the home button and curved, stylish lines. Samsung Series 7 700Z hands-on

31 August 2011 2:00 GMT / By Chris Hall

By now we all know about the Samsung Series 9, the thin and light model that looks to challenge the Apple MacBook Air in the high-end stakes.

By the same logic the new Series 7 700Z takes on the MacBook Pro. Of course, we’ve seen the Series 7 previously in the guise of the Series 7 Gamer. This Series 7, the 700Z or Chronos, is pitched as being a premium device that, well, is like the MacBook Pro.

Mentioning Apple so many times in two short paragraphs might seem like bad taste, especially considering the ongoing legal wrangling between the two companies, but having spent some time with the 700Z, it feels like a valid comparison.

To draw a line under this comparison let’s deal with the trackpad. The trackpad on the 700Z is possibly the best trackpad we’ve seen on a Windows PC to date. It’s glass, it’s one giant button, it’s silky smooth, it offers multitouch. High praise indeed, as in our exploratory play it seemed as good as that on the… MacBook Pro.

Samsung Series 7 700Z premium notebook looks magical

31 August 2011 2:00 GMT / By Chris Hall

Samsung has announced a new Series 7 notebook, the 700Z, also being called the Chronos. The 700Z is a premium laptop designed for those interested in portability without sacrificing performance.

A wonderful brushed metallic chassis houses the 700Z in a surprisingly compact package, offering up a 15.6-inch high definition 1600 x 900 display, sporting an anti-glare coating and an impressive 300nit brightness.

A chiclet-style keyboard is backlit, with a full number pad over to the right, so you’ll be able to crunch those stats on the train with consummate ease.

Beneath the keyboard sits an impressive glass trackpad, which offers multitouch support and integrates the buttons. Its size gives you plenty of scope to control your laptop, but we have to say, it looks - and feels - exactly like a MacBook Pro.

That can be said of the design in general, with the ports down the left-hand side and the slot-loading optical drive on the right. The dropdown hinge is also reminiscent of those used by Apple.

Internally the Samsung Series 7 700Z gets a choice of Intel Core i5-2430M or i7-2675QM processor, with the entry level model shipping with 6GB RAM and integrated graphics. The step-up i5 will offer you an AMD Radeon HD6750M card with 1GB GPU, as will the i7 model. All come with a 750GB HDD.

The battery life is cited as 9 hours and the only dimensions we have for the 700Z are 23.9mm thick.

It might look like the MacBook Pro, but the price sure doesn’t: the entry-level model can be yours for

iCloud iTunes Match has streaming uncertainty

31 August 2011 9:32 GMT / By Paul Lamkin

On Tuesday Pocket-lint reported on the fact that iTunes 10.5 beta 6.1 seemed to bring with it iTunes Match streaming from iCloud, rather than just the download-only option that the awaiting fanboys were expecting.

Well, don't get your streaming hopes up just yet, as an AllThingsD report seems to squash any suggestions that Apple is about to enter the streaming market.

It quotes an Apple spokesperson as stating that any digital music you want from your iCloud-stored collection still must be physically stored on your iPad or iPhone - suggesting that the stream option is more of a stream and download one.

So, rather than simply streaming the song using just your web connection and using up no storage space on your iDevice, the "stream" option would begin to play instantly (or, at least, once it had downloaded enough of the file) but continue to download to a temporary cache folder on your Apple machine.

Storage space would therefore still be a consideration - although it's not clear if there would be a time-frame set by Apple for its devices to flush this stored streaming cache.

There are said to be a couple of reasons why Apple won't go fully streaming. The first being that it is apparently concerned that the networks would let users down, and mean a stuttering playback - hardly matching Apple's slick ethos - and the second being that Apple is keen to distinguish a different service, one based on a physical digital media rather than a remote one, than its rivals such as Google and Amazon seem keen to promote.

"Apple’s platform is all about these files on their devices, that have incredibly great playback experience for the consumer," said AllThingsD's anonymous music exec source. "The other cloud version, the Google version, of playback on any device on the cloud - they’re not interested in that. Apple is

White Samsung Galaxy S II official: Coming 1 September

If you want your Samsung Galaxy S II to stand out from the crowd, but don't fancy adding a physical QWERTY as per the AT&T variant, then how about a white version of the massively popular handset?

That dream (yes, dream) is now a reality as web rumours and leaked pics have led to official confirmation from Samsung. The Galaxy S II white edition exists and what's more it's going on sale in just over a month.

Simon Stanford, MD of mobile at Samsung UK and Ireland said: "Sales of the Galaxy S II have surpassed all expectations since its release in May this year. The arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S II white brings to market an incredibly stylish addition to our latest multi-award winning handset.

"The Galaxy S II is our slimmest, lightest, fastest and now whitest smartphone, the first device to offer Super AMOLED Plus screen technology, alongside the most advanced technical specifications including the latest Android OS and a dual core processor."

The Galaxy S II is a big hit with team Pocket-lint too - we gave it the "Hot Product" tag following our comprehensive review.

The white Samsung Galaxy S II hits UK shops on 1 September.

Toshiba Thrive makes its way to the UK

Toshiba has announced that the tablet known as the Thrive in the US will be available in UK shops on 1 September, labelled simply as the Toshiba AT100.

The Toshiba Tablet, as it was once known, has fallen into Pocket-lint paws a couple of times in the past - we got hands-on with an early model back in January at CES and got another look in February - and we were led to believe that it was to be called the Regza AT300, with a summer release planned.

Name discrepancies aside, it seems as if Tosh has met its launch deadline, just, and the AT100 will add to the ever growing pile of Honeycomb tablets - although this one does come with Android 3.1 as standard.

But, with rumours mounting that Toshiba may have a super skinny tablet lined up for an IFA release, you may want to sit on the AT100 news for a day or so before splashing your cash. Toshiba's press event over in Berlin takes place on the same day the AT100 hits the shops in the UK.

Jawbone adds computer Nerd to new Icon HD headset

31 August 2011 13:44 GMT / By Ben Crompton

Jawbone has introduced a brand new peripheral, called The Nerd, to its new Icon HD headset; the duo teaming up to bring wireless audio from your computer directly into your ear.

Sound waves have, of course, been doing this for some time through the medium of air, so why do we need the Jawbone set up? Well, within the confines of an office it can get a little annoying tuning into other people's audio, and so it's dab handy if you can get mobile calls, Skype calls and any tunes you may be playing directly into your shell-like without ruining everyone else's day.

The new Icon headset has been updated with a larger speaker and clearer audio than its predecessor and also features NoiseAssassin 2.5 with wind reduction - a military grade noise cancellation technology, just perfect for an office environment.

The Nerd device is a dongle that plugs straight into your computer allowing the audio to be sent to the headset via Bluetooth, and the kit's ability to pair with two Bluetooth devices at once is, clearly, a great feature.

The Icon HD headset measures 44 x18 x 25mm and weighs in at 8 grams, whilst the Nerd measures 28 x 15 x 8mm and weighs just 3 grams - talk time is around 4.5 hours.

The Jawbone Icon HD headset and The Nerd dongle are available now through Jawbone's website for $139.

Live from IFA 2011: Pocket-lint touches down in Germany

31 August 2011 13:52 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Each year Berlin becomes the focus of the entire consumer electronics industry, as the city hosts one of the world’s largest trade shows on the planet. That is the thing they call IFA.

If you agreed with us that the Samsung Series 7 700Z premium notebook looks magical then prepare for your second Samsung Series 7 related gasp of the day as, over at IFA in Berlin, Sammy has unleashed a tablet with a twist - the Samsung Slate PC Series 7.

The twist is, this isn't the Korean giant's latest Android tab foray - it's a Windows 7 based 11.6-incher, designed to be equally at home docked on your desk as it is on your lap.

It packs quite a punch too - an Intel Core i5 chip is on board (there are Core i3 and a Pentium versions too), backed up with 4GB of RAM. Storage is 32 or 64GB of the SSD variety and connectivity is pretty good with Wi-Fi, WiMAX and HSPA

Nokia 703 Windows Phone 7 device pictured

31 August 2011 14:51 GMT / By Paul Lamkin

Nokia's Windows Phone 7 devices continue to drip out, with the Nokia 703 now doing the rumour rounds as the potential launch name for the Sea Ray, thanks to this leaked shot of the phone appearing on a poster.

The image is a little blurry - but the specs seem to suggest a mid-range phone; possibly to fall under the 800 which is said to be Nokia's Windows Phone 7 flagship device.

The spec sheet points towards a device measuring 112 x 60.8 x 12.3mm, weighing 114g, with a 3.7-inch LCD 480x800 display, a 5-megapixel camera with 720p video shooting at 30fps, 8GB of storage and 512MB of RAM.

Next to "General" it looks as if it says 27 November - presumably a release date for the handset.

Nothing more is known at this point, although the handset does look familiar to the one Elop showed off to the world (by accident, of course) back in June.

And, with HTC all set for a 1 September Windows Phone 7.5 declaration, Microsoft mobilers finally have something to get excited about.

Panasonic Lumix twin-lens 3D digital camera on show at IFA

31 August 2011 15:13 GMT / By Paul Lamkin

There's nothing quite like showing off a nice concept, making people go "ooh" and "aah", in order to kick off a massive trade show - and that's exactly what Panasonic has done over in Berlin at IFA where it has detailed its first twin-lens 3D digital camera.

The multi-dimensional compact will be hitting shops either late this year, or early next, and will be able to shoot 2D photos and 2D HD video along with the 3D stills and videos (3D AVCHD).

It uses two 4x zoom lenses with thin, folded optics and optical image stabilisation is on board for 3D shooting as well. Obviously, Panasonic is keen to stress that any 3D action you take can be viewed back on your 3D Viera TV.

As well as the 3D Lumix concept, Panasonic also announced the HDC-Z10000 (which is the picture above). This is a hardcore 3D camcorder capable of shooting Full 1080p HD video, or 1080i AVCHD 3D video.

It packs dual CMOS sensors with a megapixel reading of 13.1 and boasts a 3.5-inch 1,152k dot LCD which gives glasses-free 3D playback.

No word on pricing or availability yet - but we'd hazard a guess at "expensive".

Sony Tablet S and Tablet P release dates confirmed

31 August 2011 15:53 GMT / By Paul Lamkin

Sony's tablets have been doing the rounds for a while now, first hitting the rumour mill back in February and then getting official recognition from Sony in April.

Curiously though, they are not hitting the shops with the monikers that you may be familair with - the S1 and the S2. Oh no, Sony has shaken it up and come up with the Sony Tablet S and the Sony Tablet P - both of which have been officially detailed over in Berlin at IFA.

The S1 is the S. You know, the fairly normal looking one but with the curvy bit on the back. It features a 9.4-inch WXGA (1280x800 pixels) TFT colour LCD display and is powered by a 1GHz Tegra 2 chip from Nvidia. It has a 5-megapixel camera on the back and a 0.3-megapixel one on the front for video conferencing.

It'll come in three flavours, 16GB and 32GB Wi-Fi only, and 32GB with Wi-Fi and 3G. The Wi-Fi one weighs in at just under 600g, the 3G functionality adds around 27g.

The P is the new name for the S2 and will feature dual 5.5-inch displays (1024x480). It is a 3G and Wi-Fi number with 4GB of storage. The cameras are the same as the S1, as is the processor.

Both Sony Tablets are running Android 3.1 for the Wi-Fi versions, which we're told is upgradable to 3.2. The 3G versions will come boxed with 3.2. Both tabs are also PlayStation certified as well. The Sony Tablet S includes infra-red technology, and can be used as a fully customisable remote control for all your Sony home cinema machines.

Release dates, but not prices have been confirmed. The Tablet S Wi-Fi version will land in the UK in September, with the 3G one coming in November - the same month that the Tablet P arrives.

Pre-orders for the S being now direct from Sony and also Currys and PC World.

Sony has detailed a couple of new shiny black boxes over at IFA that it wants to see in your living room - the BDP-S185 Blu-ray player and SMP-N200 3D network player.

Starting with the Blu-ray and Sony is describing it as "an affordable way to enjoy the latest home entertainment" - so it looks like a budget model.

Still, there's Bravia Internet video on board though, so plenty of web streaming possibilities from the likes of YouTube, the BBC iPlayer and Demand 5.

There's also USB hard drive playback capabilities and it's one for the eco-warriors too - with a low-power consumption of 10 watts.

Spotify opens up for iOS developers

Some pretty cool Spotify powered apps could be coming the way of your iPhone or iPad, thanks to the music streaming giant opening its doors to iOS developers.

Libspotify for iOS will allow clever app makers to include Spotify features within their apps. In the long term, this could mean band specific apps with tracks available or festival apps featuring playlists and the like. The potential is pretty massive.

In the short term, we're hoping that it will mean someone knocking up a decent iPad Spotify experience.
