HTC Sensation XL vs Samsung Galaxy S II

Which will you be spending big on?
HTC Sensation XL vs Samsung Galaxy S II. Phones, Mobile phones, Samsung, HTC, Samsung Galaxy S II, HTC Sensation XL, Features, Beats by Dr Dre, Swype 0

The HTC Sensation XL now makes that three flagship Android handsets from the Taiwanese mobile makers. Peter Chou and his team have also once again team up with Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine to bring Beats Audio software and headphones to an HTC smartphone and that gives this package one hell of an extra shine, but is it quite shiny enough?

Lurking in the wings, as ever, is the current King of the Androids in the shape of the Samsung Galaxy S II begging the big question for any wouldbe buyer - just which one is the better phone? So, we’ve lined up these two smartphones’ spec sheets and worked it out on paper at least. It’s the HTC Sensation XL vs Samsung Galaxy S II.

Form FactorTie: Galaxy S2125.3 x 66.1 x 8.49mm, 117g
Tie: Sensation XL132.5 x 70.7 x 9.9 mm, 163g

In terms of pure measurements, it’s the first round to the Samsung Galaxy S II. As ever, it’s all about how thin and how light a mobile phone is when it comes to something that’s going to be sitting in your pocket, weighing you down and interrupting the carefully tailored lines of your clothing. The SGS2 is a touch thinner and considerably lighter. The other possible disadvantage to the Sensation XL is that it’s physically bigger on the other dimensions as well, but that has its plus points later on, as we’ll see.

However, that said, we're going to call the round a tie because, as far physical design goes, it’ll be the machined aluminium block of the Sensation XL that has the edge over the more plastic look and feel of the Galaxy S II for aesthetics and ergonomic pleasure. To be fair to the Samsung, though, that doesn’t mean that it comes across as low rent. It’s still a nice piece of kit to own. Just not as satisfying as all-metal handsets.

Display1st: Galaxy S24.27-inch, 800x480px, 218ppi, Super AMOLED Plus
2nd: Sensation XL 4.7-inch, 800x480px, 199ppi, LCD

It’s a very close run thing in the display category. Yes, the HTC Sensation XL screen offers a bigger viewing platform than that of the SGS2 but, sadly, at the same resolution. So, it’s one thing to lose that sharpness as a result of a lower pixel density but what it is that tips the balance is down to the screen technology itself. HTC has gone for a straight LCD but Samsung has all that panel innovation to lean back on when it comes to its Super AMOLED Plus. Without experiencing both for ourselves, we’d normally call this one a draw but word from our man on the ground who’s had some review time with the HTC Sensation XL is as follows:

That the resolution is comparatively low isn't great, the sharpness isn't really there, but it looks fine. The colours are good and vibrant and the viewing angles are fine from what I saw. The SGS2 probably has the better display though.

And there you have it.

Engine Room1st: Galaxy S2Samsung Exynos 4210
2nd: Sensation XLSnapdragon MSM8255

The systems-on-chip in both phones offer plenty to be happy about but it’s the lack of a dual core CPU on the Sensation XL that will draw the criticism. It’s arguable as to whether a dual-core CPU is really needed on a smartphone at the moment anyway, but there we go.

The Samsung Exynos 4210 consists of a 1.2/1.5GHz ARM Cortex-A9 CPU running the show compared to the 1.5GHz ARMv7 Scorpion on the Sensation XL. In the graphics department, it’s Samsung’s Mali-400 vs the HTC’s Adreno 205 in a battle where the former out-benchs the latter. And the final mini-round of the catgegory is for memory, again, where the Samsung wins with 1GB of RAM plays 768MB on the Sensation XL. So, dual-core or not, it’s another victory for the Samsung Galaxy S II.

Imaging1st: Galaxy S28MP rear, 2MP front, 1080p video capture
2nd: Sensation XL8MP rear, 1.3MP front, 720p video

Sadly, the headline specs - namely the missing 1080p video capture from the HTC Sensation XL camera - is what tells the story here. HTC has gone to great lengths to describe a wide aperture snapper that shoots open to f/2.2 backed up by a dual LED flash when you need it but it’s all for nought because the fact is that people want Full HD recording. The slight dip on the resolution of the front-facing webcam doesn’t really help much either. As it goes, the XL might shoot better quality images but we simply won’t know that until the HTC Sensation XL review is in.

Until then, we will leave this category with one interesting caveat from the Samsung Galaxy S II review and that’s that the autofocus does tend hunt around a bit during video capture and that can ruin your clips as they drift in and out of sharpness on occasions. You have been warned.

Connectivity1st: Galaxy S2Wi-Fi, NFC, 4G, BT 3.0, DLNA, Wi-Fi tethering
2nd: Sensation XLWi-Fi, BT 3.0, DLNA, Wi-Fi tethering

The SGS2’s constant pipping of the XL to the post is making the HTC look like a bad handset which it certainly isn’t. It might not be a big deal in the UK that there’s no 4G radio or NFC technology included but in countries where both infrastructures exist, that could be quite a let down. As we say, both phones here have got the basics, as well as tethering potential and the luxury of streaming your bits and pieces without the need of cables, but it’s the Samsung Galaxy S II that can claim the advantage on paper.

Battery Life1st: Sensation XL1600mAh, up to 11 hours talk time
2nd: Galaxy S21650mAh, up to 8 hours talk time

Despite the larger battery unit, the quoted life of the Samsung Galaxy S II is smaller than that of the Sensation XL. Now, it’s quite possible that Samsung has stated 3G talk time whereas HTC’s refers to 2G talk time but, since Samsung has said no more on the matter, then that’s what we have to believe - that you can get up to 8 hours of talk time on the SGS2 after a single charge.

That may be because it’s running a dual core processor or more RAM or a different screen technology. Or it may be inaccurate. Either way, both phones will probably make it from dawn till dusk on a single charge and that’s about it.

Software1st: Sensation XLAndroid 2.3.5 Gingerbread + HTC Sense 3.5
2nd: Galaxy S2Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread + TouchWiz 4.0

We can sit and argue about tiny decimal places of updates on Gingerbread but what separates the sheep from the goats in this software match-up is the custom user-interfaces each compay has placed on top of Google’s mobile platform. TouchWiz 4.0 is ok. It neither gets in the way nor adds anything really significant to the equation apart from All Share and the wireless syncing tool that is Kies Air both of which you can find replacements for on the Android Market anyway. As it goes, the only unique piece of software is the Swype keyboard which is actually rather good.

The Sensation XL, on the other hand, gets the benefit of HTC Sense 3.5 UI which is known for its neat integration of your contacts and their details, as well as an excellent graphical look and feel. On top of that, the XL also comes with the Beats by Dr Dre audio circuitry inside to improve the quality of your digital music.

StorageTie: Galaxy S II16/32GB + microSD
Tie: Sensation XL16GB

Bit of an odd one this but the HTC Sensation XL comes in just one memory size and with no expandable storage options. 16GB isn’t titchy and will probably do you fine but in the face of anywhere between 16-64GB on the Samsung Galaxy S II, it’s really no competition. The question is just how much data are you looking to carry around at any one time?

PriceGalaxy S2?410 (16GB)
Sensation XL?unknown (16GB)

No prices just yet for the HTC Sensation XL, so not a lot we can say about this round for the time being. However, since the SGS2 has been around for a while and the XL is fresh out of the blocks, we’re willing to bet that’s the latter that comes out more expensive.

Conclusion1st: Galaxy S2
2nd: Sensation XL

Apart from a dubious call on the battery and a good win on the software front, the HTC Sensation XL doesn’t come out too well on paper against the current king of the Androids. All the same, to warn you off the Sensation XL would be a mistake. It’s a good looking device with a good looking UI and some great sounding audio. It even comes packaged with some decent Beats By Dr Dre headphones too. For pure grunt though, it can’t quite match the Samsung Galaxy S II which will run games better and is probably the superior device to use as a video player too.

That said, if you’re all about look and feel, playing music, browsing the web and taking cracking stills, then you may find that the HTC Sensation XL is actually more suited to your needs.

CEATEC 2011: Wacky phone accessories on show
DoCoMo breath testing smart jacket pictures and hands-on

As well as showing off its super-fast battery charging system, Japanese mobile carrier DoCoMo also used CEATEC 2011 as a launch pad for its range of three smartphone smart jackets.

And when we say smart, we really mean quirky. And when we say quirky, we actually mean pointless.

Maybe that's a bit harsh as we're sure there are plenty of people out there who are going to want to measure their body mass index and muscle ratio using a phone case, right?

This fitness option, which works via four electrodes on the sides combined with your personal data (age, sex, weight, height etc.) that you add before hand, also lets you store your and your friends and families' body statistics, and chart them against each other.

Like a game, but with much more hurtful outcomes.

There's also a safety model which measures radiation in the air, using semi-conductor sensors; which we'll concede actually does have a purpose, in Japan especially at the moment.

Finally is the ladies model. Yep, that's what it's called. This pink flavour measure UV rays in the air and also lets you map results so you know the safest place to get a tan. It also works as a breathalyser, measuring the alcohol units in your breath.

But we saved the best until last. It also smells your breath to let you know if you know if you're rocking a funky twang. This was the aspect that Pocket-lint had a go at – there was no way we were going anywhere near the alcohol measuring app.

The result? A low odour reading of 1, of course. Pocket-lint is always minty fresh.

Only in Japan eh? You couldn't imagine O2 coming up with a range of smartphone accessories such as these could you now?

Samsung Nexus Prime 11 October launch pulled

EXCLUSIVE: Shock move
Samsung Nexus Prime 11 October launch pulled!!!

Pocket-lint has just learnt that the Samsung Unpacked 2011 event due to happen on 11 October in San Diego has been canned. And the planned unveiling of both Android Ice Cream Sandwich and the Samsung Nexus Prime is not going ahead.

We have received the following combined statement: "Samsung and Google decide to postpone the new product announcement at CTIA Fall. We agree that it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced."

Naturally, with all of the Nexus Prime gossip and rumours that have been flying around over the last few days, including the confirmation by one of our sources that the handset WILL be launched on 11 October, this decision must have been made very recently.

However, perhaps the drastic decision has been made out of respect for the sad passing away of long term rival and industry icon Steve Jobs. And, if so, Pocket-lint can fully understand; if, for example, the ex-Apple CEO's funeral is to be held around the same time, it may be insensitive to whip up a media frenzy over a competing device.

We will update you as and when Samsung and Google set a new date for launch.

UPDATE: Although some websites are reporting that the event is now set for 27 October in London, Pocket-lint can confirm that this is not happening either. Sorry.

Neither Samsung nor Google has decided on a new date or location for the Nexus Prime launch yet.

We've detailed all the deals we can find to help you find the best deal in the UK for you.

Apple iPhone 4S deals

Apple aren't offering any deals beyond giving you the chance to upgrade without having to worry about signing up for another contract or convincing your operator to let you upgrade early.?

UPDATE:?Apple day one online pre-order stock looks to have runs out

Apple iPhone 4S pre-order page

Vodafone iPhone 4S deals

Vodafone has announced its pricing for the iPhone 4S on Friday morning starting off what is likely to be a fierce battle by the networks to make sure you order with them over the competition.

iPhone 4S deal hunters will be able to get the new smartphone from Apple for free if they spend ?46 a month on a 2 year contract with Vodafone that gives them 1200 minutes, unlimited text messages and 750MB of data.

Those looking to sign up for the shortest duration of contract, so you can upgrade to the iPhone 5 when it comes out next year, will be able to sign up for a 12 month contract for ?51 a month paying ?139 for the phone. That deal comes with 1200 minutes, unlimited texts and 750MB of data a month. Don't forget as well that signing up for Vodafone gets you access to the data test drive and 3 months of unlimited data to play with.?

Those who do decide to pre-order will automatically get ?59 back off their bill in November.?

Vodafone is also offering significant lumps of cash for your old iPhone 4, with a 16GB version reaching up to ?212 in cash. Sadly owners of the first gen iPhone are only going to be taking home ?23 if you trade it in.?

Vodafone pre-order page

Orange iPhone 4S deals

Orange is offering a simpler deal with those looking for a new iPhone being able to get one free 16GB iPhone 4S if they spend ?46 a month. That ?46 quid gives you 900 minutes, unlimited text messages and 1GB of data a month.?

Those looking to push the boat out can pay just ?99 for the 64GB model, but will have to sign up to a 2 year contract with Orange for ?61 a month.?

Orange pre-order page

T-Mobile iPhone 4S deals

T-Mobile has kept its pricing very much inline with Vodafone's, offering a 16GB iPhone 4S for those willing to stump up ?46 per month on a 24 month contract.

For that you get yourself the same 1200 minutes as Vodafone, but lose out on the text message front, with only 500 to play with. You also have to deal with just 750MB of data to play with, rather than the 1GB offered by Orange.?

You do get to pick a flexible booster to go with your plan, which means you can opt for unlimited text messages or if you prefer, go for things like unlimited landline or unlimited T-Mobile talk.

T-Mobile pre-order page

O2 iPhone 4S deals

O2 has yet to announce its deals for the Apple iPhone 4S, but have confirmed they will be stocking it. We will update this story when it does.?

Three iPhone 4S deals

Three has now opened its iPhone 4S pre-orders and is offering the cheapest handset prices so far.

The 3G-only carrier is offering a free 16GB iPhone 4S on a ?43 per month, 24 month contract, which will also give you 900 minutes, 1GB of data and 5,000 texts.

There are several all-you-can eat data deals, with a ?35 per month, 24 month contract also offering 2,000 minutes of talk time and 5,000 texts. The handset price if you opt for this package will be ?279 for the 64GB iPhone 4S. Alternatively, you can opt to pay ?50 less for the phone, and get a ?35 per month contract, which gives you 500 minutes, 5,000 texts and 1GB of data.

Three pre-order page

Verizon iPhone 4S deals

Verizon has taken a relatively straightforward approach to its iPhone 4S approach, adding $100 dollar jumps for each handset memory upgrade.

A 16GB iPhone 4S will set you back $199 on a 24 month contract with unlimited text, picture, video and instant messaging. You also get free Verizon to Verizon calls and unlimited night and weekend minutes.

The contract itself comes in three?separate?forms, in either 450 minutes for $59.99 or 900 for $79.99 or for the really talkative, unlimited for $89.99. 2GB of data to play with is going to add $30, going all the way up to 10GB for $80.?

Verizon pre-order page

Sprint iPhone 4S deals

Exactly the same pricing as Verizon on the actual handset front here, meaning $199 for the 16GB, $299 for the 32GB and $399 for the 64GB.?

You are then presented with a choice in terms of free minutes between 450, 900 or unlimited. The cheapest option, the 450 is priced in at $69.99, with $89 for the 900 or $99 for the unlimited. You get all the usual unlimited text message bells and whistles, with an extra $10 required for premium data, which is a necessary on the iPhone 4S.?

Sprint pre-order page

AT&T iPhone 4S deals

Same price across all US networks for the iPhone 4S. $199 for the 16GB and then $100 dollar jumps each memory boost.?

Opt for a nation 450 plan for $39.99, or a 900 for $59.99 or unlimited for $69.99. You can then add data at either $15 for 200MB, $25 for 2GB or 4GB for $45. Another $20 per month will get you unlimited messaging.?

AT&T pre-order page

Phones4u iPhone 4S deals

Phones4u is offering quite a wide range of iPhone 4S deals, including some rather juicy ones for those looking to pick up the top spec 64GB handset. Opt say for a contract with Orange over 24 months, at ?46 per month and you will need to shell out ?189 for the 64GB iPhone 4S. This brings with it no less than 1200 minutes and 3000 texts, as well as 750MB of data to play with.?

Down the 16GB spectrum of the iPhone 4S, the best we can see is Vodafone's 24 month, ?41 per month offering. This asks you shell out ?59 for the handset but includes 900 minutes and 3000 texts as well as 750MB of data and European browsing. You can opt to pay ?46 per month and take the handset home for free.?

Visa Wallet to take on Google Wallet in 2012

Will hold multiple cards
Visa Wallet to take on Google Wallet in 2012. NFC, Visa, Visa Wallet, Google Wallet, Phones, Android apps, iOS 5 apps, BlackBerry apps, iOS 4 apps 0

Visa may have given Google its approval to use the company’s payment system for its Google Wallet?service, but that doesn’t mean the company doesn’t have plans of its own.

Steve Perry, commercial director for Visa Europe, has confirmed that Visa is planning on launching its own virtual wallet system in August / September 2012.

Perry, who made the comments at the company’s first European security summit in Frankfurt, refrained from going into too many details about the service, however did reveal that you would be able to add multiple cards to the virtual wallet that would work on your phone.

“It will work with not just Visa cards from multiple banks, but other cards like American Express,” he told the delegates that included bankers, security experts and Pocket-lint. ?

Perry, who seems very grounded as to the barriers that might stop adoption of the technology, added: “If the digital wallet isn’t as sexy as my current wallet, then it won’t take off.”

The features will most likely fit into the company’s current app offering rolling out over the next couple of months on Android, iPhone, and BlackBerry.

It will work in connection with an NFC chip in your phone allowing you to either use the wallet to “tap and go” on one of the many contactless terminals around Europe, or if needed, act as the kicker for larger payments after prompting a chip and pin entry on the terminal instead.

Nokia, Samsung, and BlackBerry have all said that they are launching NFC-enabled smartphones in the coming months.

Research by Visa suggests that payments initiated by mobile devices will outnumber transactions initiated by plastic cards with 10 years.

Seeing themselves as a technology company rather than a payment company, Visa hopes a number of initiatives will help it stay one step ahead while combating fraud as well.

In September the company announced a person to person?payment system which will go live at the end of October allowing you to send money to other people using their mobile phone number.

The service will be able to offer single currency payments anywhere in Europe including cross border. Visa has said that it plans to add multiple currency support in the near future.?

Virgin Media to offer free 3G Spotify streaming to mobile customers

Allowed to use Everything Everywhere network too
Virgin Media to offer free 3G Spotify streaming to mobile customers

Virgin Media mobile customers will soon be able to use Spotify via 3G on their phones without incurring any data charges, or affecting the accompanying phone’s data allowance.

The news for Virgin Media customers follows the company’s announcement earlier in the year that saw its TV customers getting the music service via their set top box.

“Virgin Media will be offering Spotify packages for their customers that will see the mobile broadband allowance on the phone not affected in any way, when purchased through Virgin Media,” reports mobile phone news website OneMobileRing.

In related news, Virgin Media mobile customers will soon be able to use the Orange and T-Mobile network in a deal that should vastly improve coverage for its customers.

Virgin Media has always used the T-Mobile network for its call coverage and now, because of the bigger move by T-Mobile and Orange in the UK to become Everything Everywhere, it'll benefit too.

Customers can opt into this new roaming offer by sending a text message with "Yes" to the number 789777.

Whenever Virgin Media mobile phone owners are in an area with poor or no VM coverage, the phone will automatically switch to an Orange network for the restored call signal.

“Currently this will only work for calls, text messages and 2G data, but OMR has been told the 3G service will be coming next year, along with seamless in-call hand over,” reports the site.

Fujitsu K: World's fastest supercomputer eyes-on

CEATEC 2011: Windows not included
Fujitsu K: World's fastest supercomputer eyes-on. Hardware, CEATEC2011, Fujitsu K, Fujitsu, Super computers 0

Over in Japan at CEATEC, Fujitsu was showing off the K supercomputer, the fastest ranked computer in in the world.

Back in June, the Fujitsu K dethroned China's Tianhe-1A machine to take top spot. It is, in fact, more powerful than the rest of the top 5 put together.

It packs an incredible 672 racks with a whopping 68,544 CPUs making it capable of a benchmark performance of 8.162 petaflops, which is a quadrillion floating-point operations per second. Its aim to to hit 10 petaflops next year.

It's not officially in use yet, the idea is to having it up and running by the end of 2012 (with 800 racks) as a part of the High-Performance Computing Infrastructure (HPCI) initiative led by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

The computer will mean “ground-breaking impact in fields ranging from global climate research, meteorology, disaster prevention, and medicine, thereby contributing to the creation of a prosperous and secure society” and is a result of a partnership between Fujitsu and Riken.

We'd love to take it for a spin. We bet we could blaze through a season or two on Football Manager with this bad-boy.

Samsung Nexus Prime hands-on pictures and video leak

So that's everything then
Samsung Nexus Prime hands-on pictures and video leak

On top of all the leaks and news coming out about the Samsung Nexus Prime, Romanian website mobilissimo.ro now claims to have been sent an exclusive hands-on video with the new device.

The unnamed source has also sent the site several screengrabs, which they claim to have been taken from the forthcoming handset, which show Google's new version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, in action.

If you want to see the video yourself, you need to be quick as it seems to be being pulled from video streaming sites almost as quickly as people are putting it up. However, Pocket-lint has taken some screen shots of the clip for you to enjoy.

You don't really get to see much in the vid, to be honest, but the one thing that's for sure is that, if genuine, the handset is a decent size, with a screen that puts Apple's new iPhone 4S to shame.

More on this as we get it...
